Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a psychological approach developed by Paul Gilbert, designed to help individuals cultivate self-compassion and reduce feelings of shame and self-criticism. It integrates concepts from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with techniques from evolutionary psychology, mindfulness, and neuroscience.

CFT emphasises the importance of compassion for oneself and others as a means to improve mental well-being. It encourages individuals to develop a compassionate mindset, which can lead to greater emotional resilience and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Key components of CFT include:

  1. Understanding Emotions: Exploring how emotions are influenced by our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves.

  2. Cultivating Compassion: Developing a nurturing and supportive inner voice to counteract negative self-talk.

  3. Mindfulness Practices: Incorporating mindfulness techniques to enhance awareness and acceptance of feelings without judgement.

  4. Balancing Systems: Recognizing and balancing the three emotional systems: threat (survival), drive (motivation), and soothing (compassion).

CFT can be beneficial for individuals struggling with self-esteem, trauma, and interpersonal issues, helping them to foster a more compassionate relationship with themselves and others.
